Low-income homes across England and Wales are to be accommodated with solar panels under a new scheme backed by the government.
The renewable energy company Solarplicity will partner with social housing providers across England and Wales, installing solar panels free of charge to 800,000 homes over the next five years. The first 100,000 to be installed by the end of 2018.
Dutch Company, Maas Capital have invested £160m of capital expenditure to roll out the program, creating community energy schemes and providing tenants with long-term reductions on fuel bills.
In addition to providing homes with solar panels, Solarplicity will use LED bulbs and provide the home owners with smart meters to show how much energy they are using throughout the day. Solarplicity says that the panels could save home owners on average £240 per year on their energy bills.

“After a record year for new foreign investment into the UK, this initial £160 million capital expenditure programme will deliver massive benefits to some of the UK’s poorest households. As well as creating 1,000 jobs and delivering cheaper energy bills for up to 800,000 homes, it shows yet another vote of confidence in the UK as a place to invest and do business.”
