Businesses Fail to Comply With ESOS

The Environment Agency launch civil enforcement proceedings against organisations who fail to comply with ESOS.

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria, auditing their energy used by their buildings, transport and industrial processes to identify cost-effective energy saving measures.

The Environment Agency (EA), the scheme administrator, is currently launching civil enforcement proceedings against organisations who fail to comply with the ESOS regulations. Last year’s deadline resulted in many organisations failing to hit compliance. Following investigation, it was identified that there were around 500 organisations who failed to comply. Alongside this, another 2,800 organisations notified the EA that they were going to be late in submitting their compliance notifications, which resulted in some receiving enforcement notices.

Of the organisations that applied only 16% were fully compliant, with 75% being compliant but needing to take remedial actions. The rest either didn’t qualify or were non-compliant.
